COAI Asks Trai to Examine Reliance Jio’s Latest Triple Cashback Offer

Cellular Association of India (COAI) today said that telecom regulator (Trai) should examine the latest Triple Cashback offer of Reliance Jio. The Mukesh Ambani led telecom operator recently unveiled a cashback offer under which it is offering 100% cashback on a recharge of Rs. 399 and above.

“If the offer is in the nature of cash back, the question arises as to what conditions attach to receiving the cash back. Is this another way of discounting the service cost,” said Rajan Mathews, director general of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). “TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) will need to parse these offers to determine if any of this violates their tariff regulations in letter and spirit,” he further added.

RS Sharma, Chairman at Trai responded that the regulator is actively looking into the tariff plans filed by the telecom operators. “We routinely examine the offers and we will continue to do so,” said RS Sharma, as per an ET report.

He also said that regular will come into play if they find out something against the rules. COAI represents the incumbent telecom operators- Airtel, Vodafone, Idea Cellular, and Reliance Jio. In the past, the new entrant accused COAI saying that it’s favouring the top three telcos.

To recall, Reliance Jio has announced a Triple Cashback offer, under which it is offering up to Rs. 2,599. Customers whoever recharges for a Rs. 399 and above tariff plan will get Rs. 400 vouchers, which can be used for eight recharges divided into Rs. 50. This offer is applicable only to JioPrime customers.

Alongside the 100% cashback offer, the company is also offering instant cashback of Rs. 300 into digital payment wallet apps such as Amazon Pay, Freecharge, Mobikwik, PhonePe, and Paytm. Also, Jio is offering e-commerce vouchers worth Rs. 1,899 such as AJio, Yatra, etc. Jio will be running the offer until November 25.
